Peter Patrick began working life as a Technician In Training in Australia’s Postmaster General’s department (PMG) in 1964. Following basic training lasting 12 months he specialised in Radio & Broadcast passing Radio & Broadcasting Senior Technician examinations in 1970. He is educated to associate diploma level in electronics.
There was always a passion for audio and radio communication. The first Sound Level Meter used was a Valve operated battery-powered GR unit identical to the one pictured below. This one resides in the workshop as a reminder of days long gone. For those with a long association with Brisbane that device – along with a lot of other equipment which would now attract a heritage listing – was located in the PMG Radio Laboratory, in the Scottish Union House basement at Eagle St Brisbane – long since demolished.
Peter survived a 35 year career with the PMG /Telecom / Telstra in the transmission and radio-communications discipline. Highlights include building the final analogue link around the continent (Katherine to Kunurra), and the first digital radio link across Arnhem Land (Jabiru to Nhulunbuy) earning two State managers awards for outstanding achievement along the way. The career path wound up when Peters last position was abolished in a restructure. Alternative employment was available in the company but wasn’t attractive.
Peter set out on a path of self employment in audio and acoustics in 1998 when Scientific Acoustics was first registered as a part-time venture. Decades of wrestling with dB’s, signal to noise ratios, group delay and the like weren’t lost on audio.
Travelling to international audio seminars whenever possible Peter enjoys working with some of the worlds latest audio prediction test & measurement systems and has a long list of successful projects to his credit. He is a contributing member to the Synergetic Audio Concepts Forum and a Beta Tester for EASE, EASERA and SysTune software. He has convened every EASE training seminar so far held in Australia sponsoring international guest speakers to complement the sessions he delivers himself.
There is always something new to learn in audio and acoustics. No two projects are identical. Being passionate about dB’s & Impulse responses might be a bit odd but so what – it’s been all that’s life – the passion remains.
